From The Grand Knight

January 2008

Happy New Year:

Our council continues to be active and vibrant. In the month of December we delivered Christmas baskets to families in need, served Christmas Eve dinner to the Vet’s at McGuire Hospital in Richmond, Sir Knights ushered the midnight mass at 10:00pm for Redeemer, we helped out at Hanover Healthcare with their bingo game for their residents, we supplied Christmas Cards for the prison ministry, and this list can go on and on. The point is that you all are doing a great job with our outreach programs and I Thank each and every one of you for that. There are too many names to list for the Knights and families that helped out during the month of December but I do want to shout out to those who brought the whole family down to McGuire’s to help out. It was great to see families with little ones and those with teens getting involved and I received a lot of compliments from the Vets and our State Officers about our Council. This is what makes a Council Grand. Thanks once again.

During the past weeks we have had two more Brother Knights move closer to full Knighthood and made their 2nd Degree. Brother Ken Ritz and Tom Franco congratulations. We also had nine Brother Knights who made their journey to full Knighthood and made their 3rd Degree. Congratulations to brother Knights Rick Blair, Jeff Kolpa, Bill Reiner, Rob Cornelius, Greg Chew, Pete Florey, Alberto Gay, David Ward, and Matt Anderson.

Casino Royale is right around the corner “NOW IS THE TIME TO STEP UP AND OFFER A HAND” We need workers to man the gaming tables, prepare and cater the food and beverages, sell entrance tickets, sponsorships, and raffle tickets. We need set up people and clean up people. There are many things that need to be done on and before January 26. Please give Paul Byrnes (746-1245) or Frank Gerloff (641-2003) and let them know what you would like to do. In the meantime please turn in your raffle tickets at the Church office or at the upcoming business meeting. This is a major Fund Raiser for both us and our Church and we really need as many Knights and family to help out on this event as possible.

January is our recruitment month for membership and we are scheduled to run our campaign the weekend of Jan. 26/27 after all of the masses at Church. I will talk a little about our Council and what the Knights of Columbus is prior to the mass beginning, and we will be available right after mass to talk to any potential member and his family about the Knights of Columbus. I would appreciate anyone who is available to stay after mass and help me out with the recruitment drive. Please ask a fellow parishioner if they would like to join our Order.

Remember our next business meeting is on January 7th @ 7:00pm at the Verdi Lodge. Steve Trucchi, Chairperson for Pastoral Council, will address us prior to the business meeting opening. Steve will update us on some of the programs at Redeemer that would be of a benefit to our members. Try to make this meeting and even if you haven’t been to a meeting in a while I want to encourage you to attend this one. Also keep in mind that membership dues are now due and everyone should have received a notice in the mail by now. In the event that you have not received your notice, please remit your dues of $40.00 to KofC 11042 and mail to Steve Gerloff, 7401 Glastonburg Drive Mechanicsville, VA 23116.

Thank You for your continued support.
Ray Santucci, Grand Knight

From The Deputy Grand Knight

We have many events planned for early 2008 as you see elsewhere in the Newsletter. Please try to get involved with as many as your schedule will permit. Some of note:

  • Our Annual Super Bowl Party at the home of Mike and Joanne Bonelli on Feb. 3rd. Bring your favorite dish to share and support your favorite team. (Yes, even Cowboys fans are invited).
  • Our annual Men’s Retreat lead by Fr. Mike Renninger at 8 am on Saturday February 9th at the Santucci home. We will have breakfast available and wrap up around 11:30 am with lunch. We are fortunate to have Fr. Renninger, please come out and show your thanks, and enjoy this quiet time of reflection we all will need.
  • We have an opportunity to again deliver flowers on Feb. 13 and 14 for Stranges Florists and raise some needed funds for the Council. If you have an SUV or covered truck and would like to deliver flowers either or both of these days please contact me. We are paid $7-8 for each delivery so this can be a great help to our expenses.

Brother Knights have signed up to cook for the Council meetings for the following months:

  • January - Alex Kulinowski/Tim Cook
  • February - Tom Franco/Bob Birmingham
  • March - Bob Birmingham/Pat Reilly
  • April - Still Available!
  • May - Still Available!
  • June - Pot Luck Dinner

Thank You to all who have volunteered, let me know if you want to help with April or May.

I wish all of you a restful, healthy, and joyous Christmas and Happy New Year.

Rick Gillespie
